Disposable Cages: FAQ

How many mice can be housed in an Innocage®?

The Innocage® Mouse is sized for 5 mice.
It offers over 81 in2 (530 cm2) of floorspace. All Innovive disposable cages offer the amount of floorspace that exceeds recommended guidelines set by US Guide for the care of laboratory animals for 5 adult mice. Our caging also complies with the European Type II long caging specification for 5 adult mice.
All Innovive disposable cages for mice provide 5 inches of headroom.

It is also in compliance with the European Type III caging specification.
All Innovive disposable cages for rats provide 7 in of headroom

What is the recommended change-outs interval?

Most of Innovive customers have standardized on 14 day cage changes for Innocage® IVC Mouse. Some have extended this beyond 14 days when there are fewer than 5 mice in the cage.

What is added to the water when it is acidified? What is the pH?

Innovive pre-filled bottles are acidified with HCL to a pH of between 2.5 and 3.0.
You can learn more about our water process at the Aquavive page.

Do I need any special hook up for the rack, ie electrical requirements?

No - a standard outlet is sufficient - Innorack® has a very low power draw, which is similar to a standard light bulb.

How long can mice (and rats) remain in the IVC rack/cages if power is lost?

For mice, we do not recommend housing longer than 12 hours in the event of a power outage.
For rats, depending on the size and number of animals in the cage, we recommend no longer than 4 hours housing.
The digital controller that controls the blowers will power the ventilation system up immediately when power is restored and return to the airflow settings that had been previously selected.
If you believe you could encounter interruptions in power of longer than 12 hours we recommend using a battery back-up to support the racks.

How can I transport cages from one facility to another?

Any standard Innovive cage can be used for the transfer of animals between facilities. We also offer a special transportation lid that can be used for longer trips that span up to a week in duration.

Can the whole cage be recycled?

Yes. Our cage bottom, top, water bottle and grates are 100% PETE; they are free of glue or other contaminants.Innovive disposable cages are accepted where open neck PETE containers are recycled.

What kind of bedding is used in the pre-bedded cages?

1/8" corn cob or Alpha-dri.

What are the proper temperature ranges for storing cages? Pre-filled water?

The temperature for storing caging components should not exceed 115 degrees.

What is the shelf life of pre-filled water?

We recommend using all water within 1 year of the fill date, which is printed on every bottle.

Can the cages be autoclaved, if so, what temp?

The cages can be autoclaved for decontamination purposes. Please consult with your Innovive representative for the decontamination protocol.

Can you clean or wash the cages bottoms?

This is not an intended use for Innovive Disposable Cages. Reusing cage bottoms introduces the risk of contamination.

Can you autoclave the rat water bottle holders?

Yes - this is the intended method of use for this component.

What type of filter paper is in your cage?

A standard spun fiber filter that is used in traditional filter top rodent cages.

In the event of power outage, will the rack automatically turn on when power is restored?

Yes, the rack will automatically restart with same settings as when the power was cut and return to the settings that had previously been selected.

How do I clean the rack?

Racks can be cleaned using antiseptic wipe down, rack washer or any other means typical of this type of equipment.

Can the rack be autoclaved, if so, what temp?

Yes - 121C (250F) recommended.

Are the racks compatible with VHP or other decontamination processes?

Yes - VHP and similar technologies can be used to decontaminate the Innorack®
